I have been reading here about linkfarms and suggestions not to link back.

When does eg. Google consider a website a linkfarm?
I get a couple of emails every week from people who want to exchange links with me and I were going to engage myself in getting more links. But after reading the threads here this is not an important issue anymore.

Good rule of thumb - if you have to ask - don't link to it.

If some webmaster has a genuine product, service, article or site that is really relevant to your site (and you would link to it anyway)

exchange away.

If you are doing it to increase your link popularity - you might get zapped - you might not.

What you almost certainly won't do - is increase your page ranking.

Hint: Good seo techniques don't arrive via your email inbox.
