When trading links, does it matter what page within the website you link to?

In other words, let's say www.domainname.com has a link to my Home Page from a page within their site named www.domainname.com/links.htm. They ask me to link back to them. So, do I have to link my Home Page to the exact URL www.domainname.com/links.htm or can I link to their home page? Sometimes, these URLs within a site can be lengthy to list. What if I just want to link to the home page www.domainname.com? Would that not be considered a reciprocal link?

I hope this makes sense?

Thanks.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com] Eljaybe :)

Generally speaking, that is something to be determined between you and the other party(s). If no agreement was actually discussed (with respect to specific urls), perhaps a tit-for-tat would be appropriate. Whatever they do for you, you do in return.

As for the lengthy urls, I always 'Title' links with whatever they have within the Title Tags of that page.

As for me, if I've deep-linked to some specific material, I add the root url somewhere in the verbiage describing that deep-link.

That way, my viewers can not only see what I've found interesting enough to post - they can also see where I got it from...and it appeases those Webmasters who do not like deep-linking.
