Google figures out that now, both domains point to the same site. Probably, there are backlinks that point to each of the old sites.
Google will pick one domain name, and show it in the SERPs for a given page. However, when you type the 'unfavored' domain name in the search box, it is smart enough to know that you really mean the favored domain, and shows the results for it.
