I KNOW for a fact that I have independent sites linking to mine, but when I enter the language to show who links to my page (e.g.: link:____.com or whatever language the specific engine recognizes), the search indicates that there are no links to my site. Can anyone tell me why nothing shows? Sure would appreciate it.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld bestguess [webmasterworld.com],

What is the Page Rank of the page you are attempting backlinks on. If it is less than a 4 then google will not show them. I am guessing that this is your problem.

Do a check using the linkpopularity tool at marketleap.com
It queries several engines and gives a nice report, too.

Regarding not finding the link in a SE it could be that the respective page where the link is on is not indexed by the SE. Reasons could be that either the page with the link to yours is much to new, or it is frames based or the SE spiders are banned with a robots.txt file or the link was established after the last crawl from the SE spider and you are now between two crawls.
So be patient and continue building link relationships. The benifits will come. But it takes time.
