A major news media is offering us a text link on thier site for one week for a great price. The site has over 10 million hits a day.
I understand this will bring in lots of traffic to our site, but will it help for Google in any way, being that we will be listed for such a short time?
Please advise.

If it is a "major news media" site, then Google probably visits it frequently. They should see your link there, and note it accordingly.
They should also see it disappear a week later, and note it accordingly.

Yes, the SEs would probably see it appear and then disappear in a short time. THe real benefit of the link would be the possible traffic generated (assuming of course that you would appreciate the traffic). If for only SE purposes, probably not worthwhile, IMO, but a good value for potential traffic.

I think from SEO point of view, you can benifit only if the link drives traffic to your site...they like your site...and blog about it in their blogs placing links to your site.
