Anyone who wants to help a desperate link innocent..pls reply..

I'm new to all these stuffs and Im on the process of trying to get good links to a particular site. I have a few Q on mind and I would appreciate if i get some real helpful answers:

A. Which is better (in terms of ranking) - link ur site to others or others linking to ur site?

B.Why would others want to disguise the links on their site? What will be its effect on the site if browsers visit the site and then heads on to a particular link? Will there be a "rank" effect?

Welcome to WebmasterWorld Kish.

A. Which is better (in terms of ranking) - link ur site to others or others linking to ur site?

People linking to your site. Consider the concept of "authority" - there is nothing more that establishes your website as the authority on topic "widgets" than every other page on the internet about widgets linking to your website.

That's the Utopian goal, get as close to it as you can.

B.Why would others want to disguise the links on their site?

They are not convinced that the SE's will like them for linking to these other sites. That may be to disguise the fact that a link is reciprocal (staged), or simply the webmaster doesn't really understand what he's doing. If you think you shouldn't link somewhere, don't link. But make sure you understand the reasons for not linking somewhere before you make that decision (search "bad neighbourhoods") and read as many of the library threads for this forum [webmasterworld.com] as you can (top 15 threads there are a must, if you read nothing else). 90% of the "disguised" links that I see are due to an inexperienced webmaster thinking he's being clever.

What will be its effect on the site if browsers visit the site and then heads on to a particular link? Will there be a "rank" effect?

No-one can answer that question definitively other than the engineers working on the SE's that you're marketing through. Maybe they're analysing and incorporating toolbar data, maybe they're not. Maybe they're using Analytics data, maybe not. And even if someone could answer that definitively today, there's no guarantee the definitive answer would be the same tomorrow. I call this "chasing the tail" and personally my view is it's a waste of time.

You'll hear a lot of talk in these forums around the topic of "build it for the user" for this very reason. An SE's ultimate game is to give their engine so much pseudo-intelligence that it's almost as "clever" as a human at deciding what sites are better resources than others.

If you aim for the same ultimate target, a great website for users with great information and content, then you can at least guarantee that you're heading in the right direction.

With SEM that's about as good a guarantee as you'll ever get.
