Sounds like a Link Matchmaker site (I know the name but let's please not mention names, thanks :)).

Basically, in link matchmaker programs, you join and have the opportunity to hook up with thousands of other sites looking for a reciprocal link.

I'm not sure Google is automatically penalizing sites who use these networks, BUT, I don't think Google would approve of any site accumulating links with that method either.

So there is a definite risk factor made riskier if Google should develop the ability to detect and discount such networks. I personally believe that if they can't do it already, they will.

Just because Matt raises his eyebrow doesn't mean Google has the ability to spot and discount a particular method. They might, though. What is clear is that the raised eyebrow is a good signal that the technique is on their radar, eh?

The service that we use as part of our overall link building doesn't reveal any code. Just HTML and we partner with relevant sites only.

My guess is that "automated link networks" really excludes sites that are relatively legit and is more focused on some "spammy" activity.

I have no clue who they are though.
