I have seen so much being written about inbound links. What are they?

Other websites that link to your website are your inbound links or IBLs.

I'll add to Webworks description just to say that they are highly important for ranking purposes in the SE's, which is probably the reason that you've seen the term used a lot around here.

Ranking using inbound links as a scoring system, working on the principle that a link from another site is a "vote" as to your sites quality, was a process started (and patented) by Google. It's likely that other SE's have some form of scoring mechanism using IBL's (and certainly searches on other engines would indicate that to be the case), notwithstanding that Google have a patent on the PageRank system.

IBL's also, of course, bring you direct traffic from people clicking on the link and landing on your site.

That natural and SE driven traffic is why IBL's are top of the website marketeers "must have" list.

Hopefully that will explain why you want them.

Doing some reading in this Link Development forum will then give you a healthy overview and get you off to a good start. I suggest you start in the library, in particular, with stuntdbls excellent thread here:-

[webmasterworld.com...]

Followed by pretty much anything in here written by either MartiniBuster or SugarRae ;)

Once you've got the gist of what you're trying to achieve, I would suggest you start digging up threads from the library relating to "topicality" and consider whether you want links coming in from any old place, or whether you want to further define your sites "theme" by concentrating on getting links from sites on the same topic. This more detailed approach and look at IBL's is something of a moot point and you'll get answers probably both ways - no-one really knows the answer as to what's best now, and more importantly what's going to be best next year.

That said, it's all interesting reading...

Keep the link to the glossary handy as well: [webmasterworld.com...] so that if you see other unfamiliar terms, you can check them out. ;-)

Provided we both have our shoes. ;-)
