Acquring .Gov links

how to go about it

I have just began the link development for a non profit organization, and I found that acquiring links from goverment sites is something that would be
appropriate.

I would just like to know from the webmasters in here if you guys could recommend some methods of approaching these websites so as to maximize the acquisition, since .gov sites are much more touchy about links.

What would be the best "button" to push? How well-written does the email need to be? Any advice, experience...etc. on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Just remember - the people that work in the government are the people just like you and me. They are not aliens :) The same tactics apply to them as to anyone else.

The only difference I can think of is the government policy on linking. I am sure you can obtain it somewhere for free. For example they may not be able to link to sites that have excessive amount of ads or explicit content or something of the sort.

Tip: try to go the reverse way.

Find a .gov page which links to external sites. Check out the kind of sites which merited the links. Do a page/site/domain which is much better than the ones already linked. Then, go to the .gov and ask the link.

Even if you don't get the .gov link, you will get others (for each topic on a .gov, there are usually several similar pages on the .edu).
Yes, it may be a lot of work.

>>>Any advice

Tell them why linking to you would benefit *their* users and what type of outstanding information you offer to warrant the link. Make the email obviously personal and ask for a link. I never suggest anchor text - I like letting them link to me with whatever they want.
