1. Some forums offer a Signature at page-bottom feature, you can post up to 255 characters of descriptive text, including your site url.

2. Some members don't use the 'Signature at page-bottom' feature, they post that information (descriptive text, including url) in the text area of the post, typically at the bottom of their post.

Do forum Sig. files and Public urls (in user profile) count as backlinks. For example in this forum if a person clicks-thru to the 'user profile' and clicks the url link provided, would that constitute a backlink to your website.

If the answer to 1 & 2 above is yes. Concerning the descriptive text included with your site url such as:

Red widgets reviews
url of website

If one used the above example in many forums, would that be considered agressive link procuring spam, because of the identical decriptive text being used numerous times at different forums.

The question I'm asking is if the Sig. file, however used as in 1 or 2 above does constitute a backlink. Should one vary the accompanying descriptive text periodically. Using different descriptions such as:

Blue widget reviews.
url of website

How to use Red widgets.
url of website

View the latest Blue widgets.
url of website

If this is possible, would the forum owners object to changing the decriptive text on a weekly basis for example.

TIA

Glad to hear they do. My site hasn't been up that long hoping to get some back links. Do you change the descriptive text & link text often (or at all) when posting in forums. Common wisdom states, you should vary your descriptive text and link text in website backlinks. I'm wondering if it's worthwhile to do so in posting at forums, and article submissions.

GG has stated that what Google shows in the backlink search doesn't necessarily correspond to what they are giving you credit for as a backlink.

...just because a site shows in the backlinks doesn't mean that it contribute much (or any) PageRank to a site.
