We know that links build up over time, but I think others may want to know and myself included, how to really speed this process up. Apart from flukey one-way exchanges, articles and directories - are there any suggestions or techniques that can gain a lot of links fast!
I want to tell you something that is related to your link building campaign. It is necessary that your links must be directly based on the theme of your site. If you want 1000 links for your site, just keep in mind that they must be matching with the theme of your site.
Link building should be done with the natural pace. All links should be build manually so that those links will be perfect and help you gaining popularity and good PR.
Cheers

If a link is not recipricol - it is one way by default. What you call fluke may work well for thousands of other sites out there.
If you want a crapload of links fast (which likely will trip filters somewhere, somehow) think of something unique and viral (sort of like the things that you get forwarded from your friends in email to sites with parody videos, etc) and put some effort into creating it.
No one here with a "special" way to get a lot of links fast is going to give you that information. As I've stated again and again - link dev is a lot of hard work.
You want a lot of links, overnight and fast containing whatever anchors you want to whatever pages you want with little effort? Go build a blog spammer.
My site <snip> is a kids site and I prefer kid stuff sites to exchange with - I have been offered link exchanges with dating agencies and insurance and all other stuff kids would just not be interested in viewing.
It is best to look at other sites in your site genre and get in touch personally to suggest a link exchange - everyone benefits then.

I get requests using a link exchange service, but that's pretty useless for targeting and at this rate I'll be doing this until I'm grey haired, which doesn't appeal. Buying links is out, as it's too expensive as is advertising - even PPC.
Is simply building content enough, so why will this entice people to link to me - I mean what's my content going to do for them?
Not everyone creates websites for profit, if they think your stuff is good then they will link. It saves them covering the same stuff.
If you write stuff that visitors will find interesting then you will probably have written stuff that other site owners find interesting. Think about your visitors first and you can almost forget about how you will appear to potential link providers. They just need to know that if they link to you, their visitors will find good stuff, it's like a recommendation so they don't want to send people to a rubbish (or overly commercial) site.
I have 2 sections of content, one of which is very original and not copied. I added it a couple of weeks ago, but haven't noticed it being indexed in MSN or Google yet. Am I being a bit impatient?
All I know is that there is a way, and it's probably viral. Secrets, effortless link generation hmmmmm, well then consider this: "There seem to be those that have fallen upon the secret to effortless free income generation, and they are so generous that are willing to share this with you - for a fee ofcourse! hehe.
But free linking is probably the best way of getting a new site out there - I certainly would not pay for links if I can possibly help it. It's just I want results faster boo hoo sob.
If I said 'Excommunication in Absentia' would you know what that meant. Let's not be vauge now - if newbies are to learn and understand what points are being made.
You have a site which is good, and noone want's to link to it. Then there's the other side of the coin, where loads of link requests, but they are of such low rank, or untargeted to the needs, it's hard to imagine any sort of automatic momentum by eager webmasters.
Call me cynical if you like, but it's a lot tougher to achieve this effortless momentum others claim is so, well, effortless. I haven't yet experienced this wonder - getting a few links will not suddenly create a downfall, that much I know. But I welcome such a landslide and will let you know if it happens.
Back to my emails he.
I can sympathise with your problem (although I'm not sure I can spell). It's been a while since I went through this on a new site and I'm about to start again. I have a couple of pieces of advice that might help.
It's not all about numbers. Try to think about links as connecting yourself to your market. Find where the visitors you want spend their time online and get links from there. Participate in forums (on your site theme) or write a blog if you can fill it with something interesting, usefull or amusing.
Also, make sure you have your bases covered in terms of the major and second tier directories. Keep in mind that some links are more equal than others.
If you want to get links from the web community in your particular niche then you are going to have to build something that is genuinely usefull and unique to visitors. That's where content comes in and it will help you with conversion or building membership or repeat visits or whatever you want to use to measure the success of your site.
It might be timely information, or a complete resource or the best in depth coverage of a particular subject. It might be funny or it might be an online tool that's so usefull that everyone wants to provide access to it.
Look at your site honestly and ask whether there is some aspect of it that is better than all the rest of the sites on your topic (or most of them). If it isn't then you need to find a way to change that.
At the end of the day a lesser number of good links from the right places with the right anchor text can see you up the rankings and competing sooner than most people think.
So, keep working at it and don't stress too much about the numbers and it will usually work out over time.
Buying Links is a trade, lets assume you are being paid a good CPM and the rate, if you are paying for a/the link that will drive traffic to your site, if there is profit in the move take it buy the link.
If you are selling a product you should treat you site as a company, whats the CTR on that link and then how many of these vistors will buy your products. So Event_King assume that links are important but relative to what.
I know the big techies will have some view on this matter..what say you moderators..?
