Massive Link Increases for New sites

I haven't yet experienced a massive 'surge' of one-ways links, but I'm wondering if that happens for fairly new websites - say around the 8 months mark.

Who has it happened to and over what time period?

how many links you need to compete in your particular niche.

As a multiple site owner, I've found that to be true. Some sites have pages that rank very well with very few links (less than 20), while others are nowhere to be found with hundreds of links. It's why keyword research matters so much.
