Generally speaking, it's advisable that you get a stable number of backlinks over a specific period of time. For example, if you get 5 links in the first week, it would be great to get 7 links in the 2nd week, 10 links in the 3rd week and so on.
From my own experience it's much better to get backlinks in low numbers but steadily over time. Getting to the top of serps should be a long-term project and not a rapid one.
Just my 2 cents
Many people don't have 'constant' development of their site - esp if its not a full time profession - they often have flurries of activity, followed by lethargy.
while 100 links in 2 days may trigger something, nothing for several months followed by a concentrated burst of energy shouldn't in itself be penalised. But I'm using shouldn't as a personal feeling as opposed to what an algorithim may decide.
Sites WILL link to you, okay some welcome and others not so welcome, but it comes.
I've got 31 one-way links just from Gambling sites in about 2 weeks, and there is little I can do to control that.
The SE's know that as well. I don't believe any IBL can hurt you, therefore. I think the SE's merely discount new IBL's for new sites for a set period of time. If that link to you is still in place 3, 6, 12 months later (who knows?), then you get the credit for it. Sandbox, anyone?
I follow a "get all the links you can as soon as you can" strategy for new domains. I make sure they're relevant and on pages that Google has cached within the last 2 months at the longest. While I'm waiting for Google to finally recognize my site and rank it, I enjoy the organic traffic Y, AskJeeves, and MSN send my way. Works for me.
