I am working with a university site that is hosted on .COM as opposed to .EDU

Will the link carry the same weight?

no.

.edu links are golden and carry a magical quality with the SE's, but .com is just...well a .com.

AFAIK a 'university' does not have to be accredited to register an .edu domain name.

I'm not about to try this, but black hat types could might set up something like SEOU,
(South Eastern Omelet University). Its a piece of work.

A large old ivy covered church might do for the front page image.
Departments might include Foreign Travel, Mortgage Finance, Specialized Medicine
and all sorts of stuff. New departments could be created as needed.

Outgoing links would be made available for monthly 'honorariums'.

The whole house of cards will tumble the first time a human looks at it of course,
but it could be fun for a while.
I hope I'm not stepping on something already in place. -Larry

Larry is wrong. As of 2001 you must be accredited.

If the .com is in the edu space, and has lots of links to and from other high quality edu and gov sites, then there will be some above average benefit in receiving links from the .com, IMO. But that would be true of any very high quality site that has great IBL's and relevance to your site, that links to you.

Hi Alphacooler: I could easily be wrong.
Please indicate which authorities prevent me from
setting up Widgets-U, complete with a cast of 'professors'.

You could salt keywords with the names of ivy league institutions.
You could even put up phony athletic competitions, using random number generators
just like downtown!

Just remember that alpo-univ.edu cannot last forever.
Anything this phony will fall apart the second a human looks at it.

My dog died long long ago.
Please email the dog (not me) about quality outgoing educational links.

Best wishes -Larry

Larry..

Go to icann.org and read through their documentation...you will find plenty of info regarding
the restrictions on registering .edu domain names

AND YES...any human would quickly see through a scheme like you propose

educause dot edu is the source for information and restrictions. yes, you must be an accredited 4 yr degree college to get one.

[edit reason] Let's talk about business, not conduct it here. Thanks. ;) [/edit]
