What is the best way to exchange links with merchants running affiliate programs for an affiliate directory?

I tried using a link exchange software for mining information but never got around to sending automated mail. It seems way too spammy. Visiting each merchant's site and writing to them is what I've been doing. The response has been good but this has been taking up far too much time. Is there a middleroad that I'm missing? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Just build up a sheer volume where it does not matter if half reply or not. Will give you time to go and do something else while your mailer blasts your message out.
