I have been gathering information on SEO for a site I am optimizing and I have a question about links to this site.
I have been trying to build up inbound links to my site, and was wondering about page ranking. I am using the google tool bar to give me a rough idead of the page rand of a site, and was wondering when I get a link to my site. Is it the page rank of the location of the link to my site that is looked at by google or is it the site in general.
So of the site I have linking to me are pr5 on the home page but pr1 or 2 on the links page. This is something that I have been looking for info on and have not had any luck.
I hope you don't mind this question.
thanks

I have been using SEO Reports demo to check on links to my site. I have found that I have around 100 links right now split between Yahoo, MSN, Altavista, Google etc.
But google only has 3 links to my site, all the others have 30+. Whats up with google? MSN has no at all.
I have notice they don't come by very often where as Yahoo come almost every 2-4hrs.
How can I get links from Google and MSN? I can search for the sites that I have linking to me using site: and there pages are index.
Thanks

You have to consider this as 2 tiered concept. While the page is mostly believed to count by Google and not the site, you should keep in mind that a PR5 link page from a junk website does not carry the same weight as the PR5 link page from an authority site. In order word, when all else equal in term of PR, a link from an authority site can give you big boost on SERP, while the one from the junk site may or may not have any effect.
I have tried doing searches for add url? and such and have been adding my site to just about anything that will let me for free that is relevent, but most of there links pages have low to no pr.
Currently I sit at about 58 on most major search engines for my main keywords but I want page one.
Even my main compeditors only have pr3 or 4.
Any one have any suggestions. Tricks to help search for link partners etc.
Thanks
If you are desperate in finding high PR link partners, go for the lower ones who can return link with PR0-2. Don't bother about the PR at the startup, but ensure that their link page and their link to you can be crawled by the SE bots. One of the quick ways to find whether the page can be crawled is by looked at Google Cache.
where else can you get your links from?
Nevermind the authority sites. They became authority sites by collecting links from non-authority sites. This is the same as the misguided people who search for links from high ranking websites, as well as the misguided people who search DMOZ for link partners. There is no mojo there.
For maximum effect it's all about relevance + quantity. That's it.
Nevertheless, if you attain a lot of quantity, it may still be possible to break through (that's why we have blog spam) but Google is making it harder and harder to make it work.
Another misguided area is looking for sites that are PR 4 or more. Do you even know where that tradition came from? I will tell you. Over a year ago and before, Google used to only show backlinks from sites that were PR 4 or above. Many people reasoned that the reason they showed only PR 4 and above was because those were the ones that counted.
Well, it turns out they were wrong. PR 4 was purely an arbitrary number picked out by Google. This meant that links from site below PR 4 still counted. That's one of the reasons sites with pr 4 or less can outrank a higher pr site, because it's all about the QUANTITY of backlinks with relevant anchors.
One of the mods at WebmasterWorld thought that it didn't make sense to show only pr 4 and above backlinks so he gave a Googler his thoughts, this Googler agreed, and when he got back to the plex Google started showing a RANDOMIZED set of backlinks. This happened in May 2004. Check out the Google forum and you'll find the announcement.
Nevertheless, webmasters still do link campaigns with this pr 4 or more bounty. Wow. Talk about sheep who can't think outside of the box.
Just get links from relative websites. As someone else said about this exact same topic recently, if your site is about spoons, don't forget to get links from fork sites.
For maximum effect it's all about relevance + quantity. That's it.
Hi martinibuster, I am sorry but I don't agree with your statement. According to my own experience with several sites, the main criteria used by G are the quality of the page that your link is on and the anchor text of your backlink.
So, if you get a backlink from a PR6 page about sports with an anchor text that says "wedding guide" for your wedding site, this is backlink is considered significant enough by Google to boost your site.
PS. I am not speaking for pages that have tens of outbound links to sites about "weddings" "loans" casino" etc but for authority high-PR pages that have few backlinks.
So, if you get a backlink from a PR6 page about sports with an anchor text that says "wedding guide"
Sigh. Please re-read my post. We're in complete agreement. Here's the relevant part:
because it's all about the QUANTITY of backlinks with relevant anchors.
Do you ever wonder why people keep saying, Don't look at the PR? This is one of the reasons.
