Google promote this link: option as a way of finding out which sites are linking to a particular domain.

But I find it's useless! All the sites I check do not return anything like the inbound links that I know exist to that domain. So has this link: option gone down the drain or what? Is there another way of checking a sites' inbound links?

Yes, Google's backlink command is useless showing only a small portion of backlinks and also many times show your lower quality links. You can try Yahoo for approximation of what Google is seeing.

You can also see another view for approximation by typing in Google:
www.yoursite.com -site:www.yoursite.com

I agree...Google is still worried about playin' cat and mouse with SEO's.

Try linkdomain:yoursite.com on yahoo to show ALL links on your site, and a link:www.yoursite.com/page.htm to show links to a certain page.

The -site:www.yoursite.com is quite useful for removing internal links or large groups of sitewide links as well.
