Hi,

I am trying very hard to get high pr on my site and have read that I need more inbound links.

Now, would that be links from another site pointing to mine?

I assume those links should beon a link page but I have to make sure that the link page can be accessed directly from their home page, coorrect?

You'll get credit for a link from any page, as long as it's one the spiders can find.

Some folks believe that links on content pages (as opposed to just-links pages) might carry more weight, but it's hard to know for sure.

In my experience, links on content pages are preferable regardless of what the algo says, because they tend to send more real visitors.

Ok thanks, that makes sense, now how many links per link page would be appropriate?

I wouldn't want more than 50 links on a page...that's the maximum for me. The lower the number, the more value (PR) it will pass. PR is shared among all of the outbound links, so the more links, the less value it will add for your site.

Still confused, let's say I have 100 links on my links pages, wouldn't it be a logical assumption to think when I did allinurl:name of my site, that it would show 100?

Google says not to but more than 100 links on your links page.

Here's the problem. I have 4 pages of links and have not gone over the 50 links per page limit. So, I thought that having let's 200 links in total on my links pages, would mean that I would have 200 websites that are linking to mine.

I did a allinurl:name of my site and came up with only 36. How do I determine who those 36 are? I also want to know if any of those links are inside pages of my site.

Please help!

Thank you

Amy try:

link:www.domain.com on Google
link:www.domain.com on MSN
linkdomain:www.domain.com on Yahoo!

This gives you an idea of who is linking to you, and which search engines are showing that they know the sites which link to yours.

All 200 sites may not have linked back to your site or they may have removed their links. Also, some links go through a script so they may not be counted as backlinks.

I always keep my link requests in an Excel spreadsheet, so that I can track which page of a site I have requested a link from, the PR of that page, the date I asked for a link, the date their link was added and any comments.

I think you have things turned around in your mind. If you have their links on your page, that means you are linking to them.

For them to be linking to you, you need to persuade other sites to put your link on one of THEIR pages.

Oh boy, well, i got wild results:

google says 92
msn says 993
yahoo says 1420

Now with google, there are listing there that are inside pages of my website . There are also regular listing of other websites that link to me. Is there something going on with google? I could have sworn that the number was higher the other day.

What is the difference between alinurl : domain name and the link:domain name

Thank you

Buckworks, I understand. Yes, I have checked a lot of the sites that I link to and I have found my link on their link pages, so that would be a good thing.

I just did not make a spreadsheet but I see the reason to do so.

Can you tell me though there is such a fluctuation between google, mn and yahoo for me regarding the links?

Google have been under-reporting links for a while now. Yahoo and MSN show a better measure of the links that search engines count. Google takes into account many more links than it reports.

Ok so the bottom line is in roder to boost my pr,

1. get more links

2. don't put more than 50 of them on any one page

3. make sure the other guy links back

correct?

To boost your PR the most important is #3. PR is built when other sites link to you. Trade links if you have to, but if some sites link to you without you needing to link to them, that's even better.

The best way to gain links is to have such great content that other sites link to you without even being asked, but even if you have the world's best content you need a certain amount of traffic before that effect starts to kick in.

So ... submit your site to every relevant directory you can find, then start hunting for sites who might be willing to trade links. It's a lot of work, but the benefits are long-lasting.

Yes Buckworks, thank you. I do see that other sites are linking to mine that I never heard of, and that's good for me, so yes, I will do as you say and plod on.

Thanks again.
