Please excuse my ignorance. I have searched on the topic but can never get a any solid information.

I am wondering how to properly set-up links?

Is it list of links that i put on a /links.htm page or is it something entirely different hidden in the code etc?

That said, how does the PR increase for my homepage if all the links are on the /links.htm page.

I am so confused and want to do it properly before I get underway to asking for reciprocal links

Thanks

The other sites link to your home page, not your links page.

If you have a content site and can link only to other sites in your niche, you may be able to work links into the text rather than have a links page.

-Does it matter where they put my link on their page? Should I ideally look for webpages that have links on the same page that has the high pr?

-So if I understand you correctly all the links I put on my site are displayed so everyone can see them, right? Preferably withing the index.htm page in order for it to gain PR?

Is there any way you can show me a links page from memory that has a list of proper links? If I put them on my homepage they'd need to be tucked away at the bottom due to immediate area type competition in my industry.

This begs the question on how easy it will be for me to get reciprocal links. I can imagine webmasters with a relatively low PR rating would be happy to jump on my wagon. Thing is, how do they get their client to understand what it's doing there in such a cutthroat industry? Uggh...

You have no idea how much this is helping me. I appreciate it very much.

BTW, how many links is ideal? 30, 50, the sky?

Depends on the industry you're in--the more the merrier, but mixing up link text is extremely beneficial if you have many products you're offreing. I'd hate to be in travel, computers, cell phones etc just to mention a few. Wesite optimization is also probably extremely competitive by the looks of the link requests I get.

That is where I play. I often wonder how much money I could make getting links to many sites in less competitive areas. We got a campaign for casinos and loans now. God have mercy on us!

Any takers on the first 3 questions of my second post?

Thanks for all the advice you've given me so far.

It should be on a relevant page. Usually there is a dedicated links page. Sometimes, it might be more appropriate to place the link on a different page.

As above. Your links page should be accessible and will have a reasonable PR too. Putting outbound links on an index page is unusual, but can be justified in some cases.

The w3.org site has plenty of outbound links, both on its index page and inside pages. Links should be placed naturally in your text, or with acknowledgements etc.

Ok I see. So if a link can be appropriately placed elsewhere then that's cool. Otherwise there's a dedicated /links.hmt page with a list of whomever shared a reciprocal link.

If it ok to link the /lins.htm page off the index.htm page with "business partners" -or- "links?"

To this date, I haven't seen any negative effects of having a dedicated links page called links.html or whatever. Some webmasters (including myself) have experimented with links pages called otherwise, i.e. resources.html, friends.html etc. but - to this date - they are not performing better than the pages called links.html.

Some automated linking softwares place your links in dedicated subfolders and the path becomes something like example.com/links/links/links1.html or example.com/resources/resources1.html and I have seen pages like that with a PR0 and totally ignored by search engines, which seemingly detect that the pages have been done with little human intervention.

So I think it is still safe and logical to call your links page links.html.
