Themed Linking in Multiple languages?

There seems to be a general consensus that gathering links from sites with similar topics or content is the way to go when looking for link partners. I'm wondering if links from from a site which is in another language but on the same topic would be beneficial?

I imagine only if the sites share some identical keywords. I.e. if you have a hotel website in English, and exchange links with a hotel site in Polish, that's fine, as hotel is the same word in English and in Polish. However, I think, no point in exchanging links with a website in Italian, as the Italian word for hotel is albergo and your websites will have very little in common from a search engine's point of view.
