I would like to have one way links TO my site. Unfortunately, my site doesn't have much room at all to reciprocate links. Has anyone else been in this position? Also, what are your thoughts on one way links like this? Is it something that most webmasters frown upon?

A lot of webmasters will frown on it because they want something in return. However, if your site offers value, some sites will link to you without a recip.

The thing is, sometimes it's not easy (for a variety of reasons) to add many links. Anyone have suggestions for one way links?

directories and purchasing links are a good way to go. THere are tons of free and paid inclusion directories that will add a link to your site. You can find a lot of sites that will sell/rent space on their site for your link, if you are willing to pay. Local chambers of commerce, business directories. There are plenty of options out there if you are willing to take the time.

"There are plenty of options out there if you are willing to take the time. "

Good point but...it takes a LOOOOT of time to do it right. Healthy % of "Free submit" sites don't really accept links anymore.

Track it and if they don't accept your link within 3 months then don't submit with your next web project.

You'll find the "plenty" turns into "few" unless you're willing to take a LOT of time.

Become an authority in your field. Create content that other sites find value in linking to. Give something away for free - a brief how to guide, care or repair instructions, consumer tips, etc. Provide some information that's not currently available from competing or related sites.

Very true. It does take a lot of time...but I don't think it turns into "few." I never claimed that all the options are free. If you are looking for "free links," try creating highly desirable content (add a blog, forums, articles, newsletter archives). There are plenty of ways to increase content that will make sites want to link to you. Unfortunately, it is difficult to get free one-way links these days.

Pay for them.

Have a 2nd site that links to sites that link to your 1st site.

As someone else suggested, write articles and have a link to your site in your tag line.

Request that all clients link to your site.

Beg.

The best method I have found for receiving incoming (non-reciprocal) links is to provide the best content on my topic there is to be had. Lots and lots of useful and informative content, articles, photos and outgoing links to other sources of excellent quality as well.

It takes time, effort and commitment. There are no short cuts.

What I see some people do is to offer a newsletter where they claim to advertise your page in it. In return you put their link on your site. Don't know if that works, but I see it as a good way to get one-way links.

justdave, you're right "momma never said it would be easy".

Viral marketing is great. Create something FUNNY/INTERESTING in your niche then seed the link to your friends via email. Great for traffic but even better if it gets picked up by bloggers.
