Ummm, I don't think so. I will always take links from multiple pages, over links from just one page. Read about Page Rank.
Site wide links may now, or in the future, represent some sort of pink flag, but that was not the question (unless the 20 links are from a 20 page site, in which case they would probably not be an issue anyway).
> I have seen people with 1000's of links get nowhere
Me too. However, they are almost invariably doing something wrong/poorly.
We have numerous sites, in competitive categories, that are doing very well with less than 1,000 back links all in.
What I was saying is if you buy 1000's of links don't expect to be on the first page, of course IMO.
I have seen my competition buy a link in the footer of a massive site, correct anchor and it did them more harm than good.
Just out of interest caveman. How do you get a load of links from one site and make it effective?
IMHO - and I'm not certain how much of this is opinion and how much is "truth of the moment" - I wasn't really addressing a "load of links": 20 links on different pages from a site that has 500+ pages is well within reason, and even more so if the 20 links are from 20 related pages. That is how the Web was supposed to be way back when. Heh, heh...
As for larger numbers of links...and this is something we think we still see pretty clearly...the more relevant the site is that is linking to you with loads of links, the more valuable those links are. I've heard some members debate this saying that, "A link is a link is a link..." But I still believe relevant links are superior, especially within the context of symantic assessment, Web neighborhoods, etc...
And why would it be otherwise? A site with 500 pages, for example, might choose to link to weather-dot-com from most pages, and that would be a good thing if the linking site had geo pages or perhaps even if it didn't, depending upon the situation. In any event, I can't imagine that such a thing would hur weather-dot-com's site, at all. Even if the linking site were cr*p, pardon my French.

Depends. Harder than it used to be. Not impossible. Throw up 1,000's of links at once from a few big sites selling links, and yeah, that might catch G's attention...in a not so good way. Obvious SEO going on there. Not good these days. But if CNN decides to link to me from 1000 of their pages, I'll take it. :-)
Hmmm, now how can I get them to do that. Excuse me, I gotta give someone a new assignment. :-)

Does 20 links from the same site have more weighting than one link from that site. Does Google count it more than once?
For example, on a couple of directories I have links to a number of interior pages of my site, under different categories. For example, one might be www.mysite.com/bluewidgets.html, and another link in a different category would be www.mysite.com/redwidgets.html

What about directories or wiki's with different categories, and links to different pages within a site?
