In the recent update the home page moved from PR4 to PR6. A big jump for us. Now the question is should we still continue to ask for links?

Is it worth it to "risk" of getting banned for spam or should we continue to send polite targeted emails?

I am confused.. anyone?

Thanks

It depends ... do you believe in being honest or are you comfortable with lying about who you are?

Yes, but stop off for drinks more often on your way.

I don't ask for links any more. I put some text on a page that states that if your site is on topic and the page my site's reciprocal link will be found on has a PR4 or greater we will create a reciprocal link. I ask them to put the link to my site up first, then we reciprocate.

I guess I'm a real jerk but... a lot of people contact me even though their links page has a PR less than 4. I then tell them I will create a reciprocal link with them if they will also place a non-reciprocal link to my new sandboxed site (meaning my new site only has incoming links, no out going).

I've been doing this for several weeks. In the most recent PR update (just a day or two ago) my site's home page went from a PR6 to PR7. My sandboxed site now has a PR6.

My main cause of worry is "what if this PR is result of just one or two strong links?".. so I think I should keep building more.. just in case I loose the strong link.

>>>and the page my site's reciprocal link will be found on has a PR4 or greater

Why do you specify PR 4 or greater? Is that an arbitrary number you chose? Or is there a real reason?

It's time to look at this with fresh eyes.

Don't blindly follow what other people do. Think for yourself
The reason webmasters say to look for PR 4 or higher pages is the myth that Google discounted pages with less than a pr 4. Where did webmasters get this idea? From the fact that Google only showed backlinks from PR 4 or above.

Well last year Google changed that and began showing a more randomized sampling of backlinks and lo and behold Google is showing backlinks from pages with less than a PR 4.

The webmasters were wrong
Those pages with low PR had value. Lots of value. They get indexed, the anchor text counts, and your rankings will receive a boost.

Take a moment to think about WHY you do something. This notion of seeking PR 4 pages or above is based upon the wrong assumption that Google discounts the under PR 4 pages. Nothing could be further from the truth.

If you have membership to the Supporters Forum, I posted more about this over there.

PR6 means nothing my friend. It depends if you are #1 or not. I have had pr 6's that did not rank. I got a few 100 inbounds and the index page went to a 5 but it ranked #1. It is mainly about the number of inbounds. Of course Pr helps when swapping as most people are short sighted as martinibuster has just written.

I used to worry about getting banned about bad neighbourhoods and that but I believe that if you have an abundance of inbounds then a link here and there to some black hat site really does not matter.

I don't care if my page is a PR9 on the toolbar - means nothing to me - aside from meaning that the site will get more link *requests* and that I can sell "text ads" to people still chasing the green bar. Work on gaining links actively until you hit the ranks you want. Ignore the toolbar and work on attaining links and anchor text - not PR.

No blackmail was intended. But it's important to think about how various approaches would fit your overall business ethics.

It's also a lot simpler to organize if you stick to using your own name! :-)
