is Alexa a reliable source for seeing the total # of backlinks to a site

I'm trying to get a sense of how many backlinks my competitor's site has. I realize tha checking in G is not very useful and i'm wondering if the information that Alexa provides is accurate?

Not really - the links are usually very old and out of date.

try yahoo with the linkdomain:www.mysite.com

Try www.arelis.com. They have a free software download that lets you to track alexa ratings and search engine blacklinks for most popular search engines for hundreds of different sites at a time. I use it to watch my site and keep an eye on the competition.
