I have a great site with loads of quality information. Hope page PR6, other pages not so good due to some technical problems. The info on the site is completely free of charge, in most part, we even don`t require login. Also we offer a completely free service for the users. They can order some quality info and dont`t have to pay a penny. Ok, I have to admit that the competition is strong and it`s quite specific theme.
Now, at first it doesn`t seem to be difficult. People should happily link to us ( we do give their users relevant info and completely free service, which they don`t offer themselves). But no. I`ve even offered them money, but as soon as I do that, they`re trying to look at it as advertising even though they would benefit from the additional service.
My question is why do I keep failing? What am I doing wrong?
1. They don't want to be associated with you.
That could be a result of reputation (what others are saying about you), the fact that they simply don't like the way that your site looks (cosmetics), they think your content isn't up to scratch or they value your free service a lot lower than you do.
2. You're competition.

I don`t think we have a bad image. Some of the leading players on the field have mentioned us occasionally (and not with a bad word). Also, I think the site looks pretty proffessional (have seen a lot worse ones), plus we have been strictly avoiding any kind of advertisements on the site.
About competitors, yeah as I told you we work in a really competitive field, on the other hand I haven`t contacted our direct competitors, rather the possible partners who would be interested in the info.
It`s weird. Some say it`s a great service and opportunity and are willing to promote it completely free. The other ones on the other hand ask me enormous sums for a link (and I`m not willing to pay enormous cmp on those).
Maybe there`s something wrong in how I`m serving it to them?
It's all a numbers game. Not every person you ask for a link is going to give you one, no matter how great your site is, for whatever reason. Keep asking and look for the ones you said are happy to promote it. Ignore the ones who won't and keep on pluggin.
1) non reciprocal link suggestions (both the service and the site)
2) somewhat selling the package: offering money for incoming links
3) trying to persuade sites on how would their clients benefit from our service and the site`s content.
4) pay per request link suggestions
5) pay per request ad types
Would you recommend reciprocal linking? There are rumours around that it could do harm instead of benefit?
I would never offer money for a link. If your site is genuinely of interest to another sites visitors, just write and ask. They either will or they won't.
As already suggested by chrisnrae, just move on if they don't.
