linking strategies

how to achieve thousands of links?

I've done my homework and go hunt for links every now and often and in one go will contact 100 webmasters and get maybe 10% response for link exchanges/ link additions. I have no barely reached 100 links (which I guess it would mean I contacted about 1000 webmasters?..uhm.)

Now, color me blind, but NO WAY those people with 1000's of links on barely disguised affiliate sites have done the same work as I did. Most often those 1000's of links reflect a handful of sites and multiple pages per site. Can we assume that short of paid advertising (Which granted some do that) these might be networks of sites(which I know some are because they look the same). But how can an honest do gooder link exchange campaign accomplish a ton of links?

Can someone share their process of getting links? What I do is I check out the competition, do a Google backward links, and start following the cookie crumbs trails, and contact each and every webmaster individually.

OTOH, I've personally received link requests that were seemingly automated - it was on topic, so fair enough. But how to do such a thing? do we build spiders to crawl link pages for sites, then check for emails?(if that can be done-lots of technical challenges there). Is there some software that automates link search based on keywords?

ideas, ideas..I'd like to hear some.

The way to get thousands of links is to get away from the link exchanges. Focus on the alternative ways, like press releases, media attention, and building a great site that people will mention in their blogs.

thanks for the answer, but I don't think that credit-card-whatever-its-an-affiliate-website.com really gets the benefit of any of those. And yet..thousands of links ensue.

There's got to be a systemized way of accomplishing this rather than counting on the good will or fortune of some third party. And what comes easy through a blog or news link, is easily gone when the next news hits and you're cast to the archives.

A lot of work. There are also many offshore firms that will do the work for you.

A wiki sandbox is a webpage to test wiki postings. A wiki page is an editable page that can be edited by any users, hence the ability to drop URLs with keyword rich text, etc.

Is this possible on a grand scale. Maybe 2 or 3 people will link to you.

The only success I see here are those people who write articles about " google secrets" and get put out in dozens of newsletters

Few ideas :-

1) As MB said Offshore link hunters.

2) Setting up an important online Tool or service and offering it for free to whoever links to your website. Stay below the radar and keep changing link texts from time to time.

3) Give small freebies to whoever links to you. You should retain the right to reject the link though.

4) Go to pubcon and get to know like minded people. Once people know you they will not hesitate to link you (based on your market niche. Very Few people trade links with Adult, pharma or casino sites) --> Assumption.

I think over a period of time you should have your own network of links. ;)
