Multiple links from the same site

Is it just the number of pages or number of domains.

Since PageRank is, well, pagerank and not siterank, all other things being equal, are my links on 100 PR4 pages from one domain equally valuable to my site's PR as 100 PR4 links from 100 different domains?

If I work a deal to have a relevant site carry my link on all 100 of it's pages is that as good as negotiating with 100 different sites to have them carry one link to my site?

Either way we're talking 100 PR4 pages carrying a link to my site. Same same?

Hey HeyJim,

I'd say in this instance you should simply disregard page rank -- that's only used by Google and only one of the factors it considers in its algorithm.

Don't forget the other SEs and keep in mind the trend toward "communities" and "theming" and what should be a basic consideration -- the overall good integration of a site into the web. Then, links from 100 different sites are definitely more useful than 100 links from one site. And, if the sites are carefully chosen for traffic potential odds are that there would be more referrals.

And, of course, if the one site encounters any problems at all -- Poof! -- all 100 links are gone.

Thanks for the input, Jim.
Funny you put your answer the way that you did, deprecating PR some.

I was just twiddling my thumbs a bit a little while ago and wondering if in indentifying my site to the various search engines I wouldn't accomplish just as much by having my link mentioned in 100 different domains on properly themed and structured pages that only have a pr2 or 3.

Traffic is a somewhat different thing - busy sites are better - but in terms of letting search engines know where we are and what content we have do we really need pr 5's, etc., in order to score high in the serps? What's your opinion? And, anyone else peeking in.

I was just deprecating PR becuase in overall terms of link development I don't think it actually means that much.

I think "properly themed and structured pages" are the important words in your post. As for that only have a pr2 or 3,well, that's today. Next month those pages might be pr 3s and 4s, three months from now 4s and 5s, six months from now...

Get links from good sites, PR will come.

As for "do we really need pr 5's, etc., in order to score high in the serps?" I'm not even going to touch that here. It's too Google specific, there are too many other factors that impact it and it can be discussed for many, many, many pages with many tangents and much speculation. (Short answer: It depends.)

But, when it comes to "letting search engines know where we are and what content we have," then good links from many different sites are the best way to go. Give them as many different ways to find the site and its pages as possible.

Besides Google both Yahoo/Ink and Teoma/Ask use some form of incoming link analysis. Teoma takes it a step further by analyzing links among communities to identify the authoritative sites. Some time over the past couple of years there was talk that Google might/will/is using some sort of "theme" analysis through links. Haven't kept up with that so don't know exactly what's happening in that area.

I think in the long run, for general link development, I'd be more attentive to the overall quality of the site and what the page the link is on is like. Look for keywords in the page title, Hx tags and other links on the page. These are the keepers.

Well, somehow got lost in there a couple of times so I guess I've rambled on long enough. Hope there's something there that makes sense.
