Why not?

It's like hiring out your lawn for people to park on during a popular sporting event in your area - it might not look too great but it is money for nothing (a few tyre marks on your lawn).

It would take only one complaint to Google to get your site disappeared for this practise however.

Hold your horses there! The auctions at Ebay very seldom mention PageRank - Google can't stop you selling a link on your own site if you want to. If you're a PR9 and it gets a little bit out of hand, yes, but not for selling one link. I think you'll find that they've better things to do...

On the one hand, what's wrong with selling advertising through eBay?

My website has 90,000 unique visitors per day in this industry. This auction is for one month of advertising on my website. Target a unique demographic...

Sounds like a great way to test the waters for selling advertising.

On the other hand, if someone is angry at your top 5 positions and notices your auction at eBay (pretty unlikely) and then complains that you are selling advertising on eBay... how much chance is there that you'll get banned? For selling advertising?
