I recently hired a company to manage our backlinks.
The firm was helpful but when we thoroughly checked our dircetory we found that " this company "
was burying unreciprocated links on our site...
If you are wondering where all these unreciproctaed links come from check your dircetory.
It was our fault entirely... Ethics and trust are rare today with some firms.

How much oversight does a company have to exercise for managing their contractors?

A web host recently got into hot water when their contractor added invisible links within the websites that the host was hosting. Ultimately it's the victim of shoddy work that pays a hard price, so it's important to keep an eye on what people are doing.

Are the victims to blame for a lack of oversight?

Are the search engines to blame for making this whole business of ranking less than clear to business owners?

Are there too many people behind the wheel, and not enough who can drive?

This is very unfortunate.These kind of people are rare but create a lot of mistrust in the trade.I feel there should be something in the contracts for this kind of things and victims should be allowed to report about these people in the forums like this so that new people are forewarned.
