Link Developement For Online Store

help on developing links when brand is diluted

So I'm working on doing link developement for a company (we'll call BrandX) who has just recently entered the online market with their own store. Problem is, they've been selling their "BrandX widgits" online through other merchants for years. I'm looking at increasing their ranks in the SERPs, problem is all the other stores selling "BrandX Widgits" are placing better. The meta tags, and copy have been fully optimized, and it is a new site, so I feel a link building campaign may be a good way to establish some "credibility" (read: Page Rank). Any ideas on how to go about this? I'm just having a hard time of discovering good sites to request links from. I know the usual suspects: Dmoz, JoeAnt, and the other "minor" directories. Anyone have any other suggestions on places to look?

Why not get the company to put something an offer perhaps on thier site that encourages the resellers to link back to them on thier sites.

I have a feeling the distributers would be unlikely to do this, as it would be competing with thier sales. For example: Instead of buying from www.reseller.com they'd be buying directly from www.brandx.com, hurting reseller.com's business? Or do you think that people would be willing to do this?

Probably if it increased sales ie; get a free widget warranty from <a href"brandx">Widget term</a> by clicking <a href"tracking url">Here</a>.

You would of course have to insist that they used the exact code.

Failing that make your site bigger and better, being BrandX may give you a big advantage as you would be able to post more information ie;

How we make widget X
About the widget X design team
Widget X news
etc

Also you could have a page listing prefered outlets that just so happen to link back to parts of your site giving info.

So you're suggesting maybe a sort of link exchange between BrandX and the distributers? That may be possible I'll have to look into that... Thanks!
