If I got a domain www.myownwidgets.com with 100 backlinks .

Suddenly I found a new better domain www.stylishwidgets.com

I buy the new domain setup the old site on it and do a redirection. (I know it could be done vice versa, keep it as is and do the redirection on the new one, but circumstances do not allow this)

Will the back links on www.myownwidgets.com count as backlinks to www.stylishwidgets.com?

If you do a 301 it should work imho.

Didn't Googleguy say that old domains have the PageRank removed from them?

This is the timing in which things will happen if you do a 301:

1) redirect becomes effective
2) googlebot visits old domain several times and picks up the redirect
3) new domain REPLACES old one in serps BUT new domain has NO PR => ranking is bad
4) goglebot visits new domain only
5) google does a PR and backlinks update and new domain gets old domain's PR

The whole thing took two months for me.

Hanu, when was it? I think it works much faster these days due to more frequent internal updates at Google.

Are you thinking of expired domains that get re-registered? That is the only case I know of for PR being removed.

Google questions are discussed in the Google News forum [webmasterworld.com].

Questions about links as used by specific search engines for ranking purposes should be put in that search engine's forum.
