I was wondering if anyone had any success purchasing links and if they did where could I find a reputable place to do so. I have had some success trading links but some of the competition has upwards of 6000 links.
At my usual 3 links a day It would take me around 5 and a half YEARS to get that many. Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

Rookie29, buying links can be kind of risky for a few reasons. First, those selling links are often outside your topic - this may make them less valuable in the long run, and won't generate any useful traffic. Second, Google has stopped PR transfer from obvious link sellers when the identify them, so you might end up with less of a benefit than you expect.

Certainly you can consider paying for good links at topically related sites - directories, authority sites, etc.

Beyond that, in most cases you don't need 6000 links to compete with a site that has that number. A smaller number of good links with appropriate anchor text may give you the boost you need.

If you feel like you need to up your link production, consider hiring an inexpensive (e.g., student) helper to perform the busywork, or try to automate some portion of the process (e.g., site finding or contact management).

...but some of the competition has upwards of 6000 links...

How many of these links are from their own site?

Are parts of their site large information resources?

As already said are they on topic and do you think that they would bring in any traffic?

Try going through their back links and then asking the sites that link to them to link to you, if they already link to sites in you market area then there is a good chance they will link to you as well.

Thanks for the info, I guess I can go in and check their links and see if they will link back to me- it still seems though that the sites with the top number of links related or unrelated seem to hold the highest positions. It just doesn't seem right.

It's the old links and content cycle. The sites with thousands of links have an awful lot of internal links, because they have an awful lot of pages (content).

It's just good site architecture to make sure your internal linking structure helps you. Internal links DO count for a lot (unless those pages have very low PR). Build content, build links. Building more content naturally leads to more internal links.

Rogerd,
Have you ever heard of anyone paying for links to lets say business.com or what U seek ,mastersite.com and getting into trouble. Were launching a new shopping site soon and considering paying for directory links ect...do these PR values count?

An old boss of mine bought links against my advice. Having said that, it all worked out and he has seen a jump in traffic with a slow increase in sales.

Not a good long term strategy. If you are going to buy after you get some decent PR transfer get your own inbound links. Stand on your own as quickly as possible.
