Sorry,
I don't do Site A to B to C link exchanges.This tactic is becoming too prevalent, and when it reaches critical mass it's going to go the way of guestbook spamming. This was a good tactic two years ago, but it seems like the fourth wave of entrepreneurs are getting in on it now. You're the second company in a week to approach me with this type of exchange. I think we're getting close to critical mass.
Give it a rest, already. You're boring me.
mysite-A -> theirsite-B and then theirsite-C -> mysite-D. If both parties have at least 2 sites.
I also do the mysite-a -> theirsite-b trade for a theirsite-b -> mysite-c
That is what I see a lot and do personally. I have sites that I just don't do links out because they are my business and that just does not look right with outbound links. I have other sites that have really good natural PR and are really great to link out of. I have no problem linking out of those sites because they don't represent a brick and mortar business.
MB you seem to know what you are talking about most of the time but I don't understand your attitude. So you think that Google is going to decide that everyone that links to one site that links to another site will get banned or devalued? Every site there is points to a site that points to a site how could they ban it.
Google is not near as smart as we seem to give them credit for. Most of the stuff like this that we are paranoid about would take an insane amount of computing power and bandwidth to undertake. The benefit would not outweigh the cost to do such things. We all think it would be easy to do that but when you think of how many webpage’s there are out there. It is impossible to do that with technology today. You think they make an elaborate map of the internet links and find out who is doing what and ban them or they use whois and IP info as well. Also the percentage of pages that are actually out there with even the smallest amount of SEO done on them is tiny. I am sure you could come up with all kinds of ways to catch spammers but the computing power is still too

If I were missing chickens in my backyard, and I saw your cat with feathers in it's mouth, guess who will be receiving a taste of my Supersoaker?
I am not saying that Google will be penalizing people. However, if Google is aware of Link Manipulation on a mass scale (I emphasize: Mass Scale), it's a very easy process to spot the SEO who's been "juggling chickens" by the feathers in his/her mouth.
I'm not arguing against the practice. I am simply pointing out that when you receive as many email solicitations for link pyramids as you do for viagra, it could be a sign that this thing is spiralling towards critical mass.
I have a hunch G is working on methods that will speed up and simplify their ability to identify "....link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank."
PR is their cub, and we've done a lot of poking....
ie Drive down the road at 60 mph past a cop probably nothing will happen. Do it without your seat belt, he is more likely to pull you over. Do it without your seatbelt while talking on your cell phone, and well...
Thats why I always like to get some non-commerce personal/hobby websites linking in. If your very genuine and send a really nice email they are generally happy to link to you. If that doesn't work, you can always offer to sponsor them by paying whatever thier hosting costs are for 1 year, $100 well spent IMHO.
