I have been contacted by someone who owns runs a lingerie website. One of the things they want is to increase inbound links. The question is how close does this come to being ‘the bad part of town’

Try doing a search for phrases that are on their site, with safe-search on.

Seems like the way to do it.

Graywolf, I'd suggest focusing on "shopping", "gifts", and "apparel" link opportunities (to name just a few) - these are popular topics, and will avoid the more adult aspects of the site's business.

I think the success of the effort will depend on the presentation of your client's site. If the site is quite adult-oriented in its content, it will have much more trouble getting links from wholesome sites than if the products are presented in a PG-13 manner. (Of course, it's possible that presenting lingerie in TOO wholesome a manner would be bad for sales. Interesting problem - I guess it depends on the product details and target audience.)
