Does google penalize me for more than 50 links on a link page?

No, you won't be penalized for more than 50 links. There is some debate as to how many links Google will count, but that primarily affects the PR and/or link count of your linkees.

Personally, I don't like long links pages. They tend not to be good for visitors, and the links aren't usually too valuable in terms of traffic or PR transfer. I'd greatly prefer a categorized set of pages.

Yes, I agree. I do have my links categorized, but I think I will break it down into two pages now, as they are getting long.

It will look better.

In their webmaster guidelines [google.com] Google includes this statement:
Offer a site map to your users with links that point to the important parts of your site. If the site map is larger than 100 or so links, you may want to break the site map into separate pages.
which leads me to think that Google is unlikely to follow more than one hundred links from any one page.

That is consistent with many reports and discussions in the Google News forum that include leading SEO experts, and with my own experience.
