New to WebmasterWorld & fairly new WM

How do i know the best sources to place my links and how do i know what is a links farm and what isnt?

I know that i must have links relevant to my site's content and theme, but how would i get a big site in?

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, doobie_man.

Not quite sure that I understand your question correctly.

If you are talking about websites where you have the opportunity to put a link to your own website my advice would be that you avoid them. If such a service is not carefully moderated by the webmaster it will very easily grow into a linkfarm. A link from such a place most likely will not harm you, but if you link _to_ it you may link yourself into bad company.

The very first step is to make your website worth linking to: Create content, content and content. Good content. Lots of it.

Make a list of keywords you are targeting. Do a Google search. As the lists of sites appear, visit those sites which are in the niche market you are in but are not your direct competitors. As an example, may be you are selling home-decorating objects and you have located those high ranked sites which don't SALE those items but offer useful articles on home-decoration. If they are interested in link swapping, you can swap links with them.

You can also check the backlinks of your competitors and get some good link partners in the process.

The idea is to "Think-outside-the-box" -as the experts in the trade say. Your goal should be this : reach more and more target visitors using creative thinking.

Link Farms:
Arbitrary linking, junk links, links without any theme or purpose etc: as far as I know.

Also, please be patient while building links. Good links don't happen overnight.

Thanks for that, i have some ideas now.

I kind of knew that those sort of websites would or could be harmful, just needed confirmation off a more experienced webmaster.

Many thanks!
