We have over the years purchased banner space on certain sites. The banners of course all link to our site. Other than the expense, is this just a good as any other link on a site or not?

For link popularity? Depends on the link. Some links cannot be followed by the search engines, others can.

IMO (and there are some who will differ) there are other relevancy issues to consider. Spending time on a good link campaign is important. I understand, however, that this isn't an option for everybody.

Yes, it works if it directly links to you and not with a redirection script. That is why it is also recommended to have your Google Adwords not to use any kind of tracking systems. I would prefer to tay away as much as I can...if not badly required.

Sometimes, some people cache Google Results pages which is BAD and against Google TOS. But when they keep it on the web, and their pags get indexed, and then some PR, you get the benefit. And let me tell you it happens.

It has happened with me and I have seen results pages and PR changes because of that. No wonder Google removes them as they find 'em. :-) Thanks to the SPAM reposrting tooll by Google.
