I am very new to website promotion or ranking in search engines so please understand the importance of these questions i am asking.
Reciprocal Links :
Is it true that Google can penalize your website if your links page is called "Links" or even the url ending in /links.html is another no no.
I have simply called my links page "friends" with the URL ending friends/html
Also written some intresting (well i think so) reading on my links page so the page isnt just a whole list of boring links.
I also understand that it is important to only link with similar websites to the one you are linking from. IE: if you sell cars only link with car, garage, tansport etc etc type websites. And not for example a sports website. Is this true or not?
What is the point of the likes of Google stating that reciprocal links are a very importand aspect of search engine ranking when they penalize you for having a "links page" I am confused.
So am i doing the correct things so far or wasting my time, please help me someone.
Thankyou
Jason :)
Google will never penalize you for recirprocal, this is extremely unlikely.
Reciprocal could be weighed less than one-way links in the future, though (we have to wait until this update is finished to draw conclusions).
Calling your links page links.html will not "penalize" you, but if in the future Google decides to not give weight to certain strategies filename called links.html could be given a PR0 or the links simply could not be counted.
It will not penalize your site, compare it with Guestbook entries. They are simply discarded in some cases.
Reciprocal links when done correctly (see Brett's guide to Website success) can be a strong factor.
Iv'e only just started approaching relevant websites as up to now we have not sought links, just let peoiple link to us
To me, I see no benefit(apart from improving PR) to the recipricol links thing as its not really a measure of a sites worth unlike if someone picks you out because you genuinely offer something to their sites users and doesn't expect a link back in return. It becomes like some big cosy club.
Should I then return to the no recipricol link policy?
