Links - How long before we see the benefit?

My first post, my apologies if this has been asked before, I am sure it has. I have had a good look around and can’t seem to find the answer. I have been spending allot of time over the last few weeks swapping quality related links with my site mainly from PR 4 pages but a few higher as well. My site is PR 4 at the moment.

Google does not seem to be doing the big update monthly as before and I have noticed it is taking quite a while for PR to filter through to the toolbar and for backlinks to show if at all. My question is how long before we see the benefit of these links (if at all)? I thought it might be the higher the PR of your links the sooner they show up. Obviously not. The links have been added 1 - 3 weeks ago. I know I am being impatient and should wait for at least 60 days you always worry you are doing something wrong! My site is siting at 30th on my main choosen keywords (Used in the anchor text of most of the links I have been swapping). I would have thought with the number of quality links I have been adding I would see some movement.

I have read in a couple of places that Google is stopping showing backlinks and updating the Toolbar PR regularly at least as they don’t feel it is wise for Webmasters to be aware of this information, any comments on this as well? Any advice is appreciated.

I just saw my links of last 2 weeks are showing up. Sticky me your URL and I will check for you. :-)

At the present time the PR has not been updated for a while.

Though I am seeing new links/sites/pages showing up only after two or three week of being online and pulling in some decent traffic and showing for competitive keywords with out a fresh listing.

Thanks for the feedback chaps. It looks like I am picking up new backlinks on Alltheweb, Altavista etc but not Google. Are you seeing backlinks on Google, I was under the impression they were not showing these as being added frequently.

Is it possible I have some kind of penalty although I have PR4, backlinks, cache of site and rankings (All be it 3oth) on targeted keywords?
