We use a promotion tool at our company. They offer an option to trade links. When i look through the links they offer i can't find any links that are relavent to our business. I know links are important, would i be better off finding relavent links on my own?

Also when doing a ranking report, does the link count mean that is how many people are linking to you and if so how do you find them?

thanks

Hi Kosar, Welcome to WebmasterWorld!

IMO your better off finding your own links, try getting links from directories:

[dmoz.org...]

And send an nice email to webmaster requesting a link exchange, try to link with sites that are relevant to your site.

In order to find out how many sites are linking to you, you can try searching link:www.yoursite.com in google or alltheweb, but neither will be 100% accurate.

In general terms of SEO you should read: [webmasterworld.com...] a few times.

Try not to use softwares for SEO and Link Building. You can use them for research and reports though. It stays on for long. and you will always be safe and you will see better and faster results.

Read around in the forums and you will learn a lot. You should know what you are getting done. And try to get some decent ONE WAY links for yourself.

You will be up there everywhere if you get a few hundred geniune links.

the more research i have been doing on links i understand that they offer great value, but our company is number #2 in a very specific market and i have noticed that are #1 competitor has no links on there site, but pays to be in sponsored positions, i also noticed the same for some of our smaller competitors. Since we are a merchant based site, are links more important then advertising or vice versa?

Along with the question above, the links on my site:

ex1:<a href="www.widgets.com" title=" blue widget supply"./a>
ex2:<a href="www.widgets.com" title="www.widgets.com"./a>

which is more effective? And when i request my link to be displayed should it be in the same format.

Ex. 1 is better, and yes I'd do the same for external links.

Example one.

Reason being is you are utilizing the keywords in the title tag VS. a domain name. As it is a text link this will help the page you are targeting.
