I am seeing across the board on my phpBB sites that bots are coming through registering new accounts. In the members list you can view the account details as well as the 'new user' field and everytime there is a URL shown in the website field.

The same users are registered on all of my boards as well as other users I know who run phpBB. Would this be why phpNuke implimented the image verification code, chances are phpBB will go the same route.

So if your a spammer and this is your method blah ;) But if your a webmaster and you see lots of russion websites in your non russian sites and websites about drugs then chances are you got spammed. Luckiley these bots haven't started posting new messages but if it keeps up there could be a huge network of spam across the boards.

My understanding is phpNuke implemented it to help prevent automatic scripts from registering a bunch of accounts as well as breaking into other people's accounts. A lot of sites use this type of security feature now for the same reasons.

You're lucky you aren't getting a bunch of porn sites instead.
