An exactly on topic version of my UK site from the US suggested exchangimg links. He wants 15 PR6 links (out of 200 pages) from my site and he offers 200 PR5 links from every one of his 200 pages. I only have about a half dozen other fairly high PR links, some are mutual, some are not.
Am I in danger if I take this offer up?

I don't think there's any danger. You are getting 200 backlinks from PR 5 pages so that's great. Just make sure you get the desired link text. Agreed that link text from same domain doesn't count as much as link text from different domains, but still it counts and 200 links is good amount. On top of that, PR 5 links will be counted and credited sooner by google and you'll see a rise in your rank in serps soon enough. This is what I feel. You can wait for some more opinions as well.

I suspect that 200 links from PR5 pages all on the same site would count for less than 200 links from different PR4 pages on 200 different sites. No proof. Just a guess from what I've being seeing with our sites.

Perhaps consider it in terms of how much work this person is prepared to go to and the value of their site.

Maybe it would be more beneficial traffic wise to have a dozen or so link from their site on targetted pages, each with unique text (possibly deep links) and / or banners / graphical adverts.

Traditionally US based sites have much more traffic than their UK counterparts (assuming that the subject area is broad and has not much geographical variation).

User_x visits their site and sees your link on every page. They will eventually not even notice it.

However if the same user occaisionally came across your "advert" on different pages, in different contexts, there is more chance of them clicking through.

I arranged a banner / link exchange with an US based site when one of my sites was newly established (mine had a largely Euro focus at the time).

We each got a few text links and a few 150 by 60 ads.

For the next few months that site was my top non-SE referer.
