What do they know that we don't?
Well, perhaps they are doing some market studies about their customers?
Let's us take an example, fictional, but still an example.
Trees and Football(US football)
You might think that trees have nothing to do with football. Oh, really? Say that to the latest NFL-In-My-Mailbox issue.
You see, the tree industry realized that most NFL viewers hated trees in their backyard. They wanted to play FOOTBALL and trees got in the way!
Enter the "tree relocation advertisement".
You see? These two industries, although unrelated on the surface, are related through the desire to have an open playing field.
Does it work the other way? C'mon, I can't sell my NFL website in the trees-planted-online-world.com website!
Really?
"Tired of the wife bothering you for some shade outside while you watch the Sunday Special? Plant a tree!-Buy it here>>"
What does this mean to my website? How can I profit from this?
It means that you may think you understand your industry, and you might, but you may not be aware of the cross-linking that may help your website with some nice cross-links.
And please note:
These folks aren't even competing with you...
And, might I add, the ODP is a nice place to find some of those links.
At least it works for me.
The key thing to remember whenever developing a link strategy is to think about the facts. No-one spends all day at one website.
Read those ads in magazines!

The theory is sound Scott, the application of it is an artform.
Deinetly not your pre-uni spotty kid, very strong brand realisation and site stickyness coming into the foray.
