I'm going through hundreds of links I gave other sites over the past year or two in link swaps. About 75% are not linking back. Maybe some of them never did, but I think a lot of them did, then later removed their links trying to boost their page rank.
So now the trash bin is brimming over with hundred of ignorant or cheat sites. Too bad, because they were all relevant or complementary sites. I'm no longer giving out free links when so many other sites are hoarding them.
The topography of the web just got a little looser.
Kinda like ridding yourself of a disease you didn't know you had until now.
I think I did the last one like that as a follow up to a bunch of link building about 4 months after the campaign, with much the same results as you. Sad, really, that people feel they can get more by cheating than by being honest. :(
Most of the sites I try to trade with are on topic, too - and stuff that my visitors would enjoy seeing.
