Strange Reffering URL in my log

I recently found a strange reffering URL in my server logs the other day. I know I can not post the URL here, however, if anyone wants to sticky me I can give them the URL.

It is a page of nothing but links to sites and it even has PR numbers next to the sites.

It looks like its part of a SEO company site(which took some back tracking to find).

If anyone could tell me how they use this information and if it works etc...

sounds like simple logfile spamming... they are hoping that your site statistics are openly available on the web and that they get crawled... by spamming the logs, they gain "freebie" backlinks with little to no effort... its dirty and underhanded in many folk's opinions...

Our stats are not open - I have heard of that method before. This SEO company actually offers a ricipocal linking program on their site.

This page of links is just really weired as it would not do them any good unless the sites on it where linking to them also.

I guess we could be linked to them or a client of theirs and this is a master list of those folks.

The links also have the email address along with page rank next to them. I am not to thrilled about that.

Thanks for the info on logfile spamming. I get a lot of that and my logs are open! It does make me angry. I suppose there is nothing that can be done to stop it?

If your logs are password protected googlebot won't crawl them, and spamming finished.
