I am new to this forum, and have read 5 or 6 pages of post on this subject.

Is everyone doing linking for page rank or for traffic from the link itself?

I have been working on my directory for a few years now and the amount of traffic I get off my links from other sites is high.

Is anyone else building links for traffic from another sites?

Signmaker:

I do it more for becoming what someone termed "being the authority" on a phrase. For about four weeks now I've been trying to move up in the serps for one big key phrase in my industry. It ranges from #50 to 110 on google depending on whatever. By accident it improved my PR recently to a five without even knowing it. See how much I pay attention to PR?

Traffic? Most of the sites that link to me have their links pages so buried I may get 1,2, or three visits here and there. So I guess it's more for PR in my case.

Hi Signmaker,

My links are for PR. I don't really expect traffic from my links on other pages for the same reason as Hardwod_Guy, they are buried too deep.

Both, signmaker. I've gotten some great links that bring visitors every day. Not lots, perhaps, but it's very stable and reliable. Not only that, but the visitors are usually of high quality.

Other links generate little or no traffic but help with PR.

What to avoid: Disorganized link pages with many links - no clicks, minimal PR.

Homerun: a prominent home-page link from a busy, high-PR site. Too few of those, but they are great when you get them.

P.S. Welcome to WebmasterWorld, Signmaker!

After about six months of casual link hunting for purely PR purposes:

- My Google PR has dropped one point.
- The traffic from the new links I found has grown to be larger than that from YahooGoogleAOL.
- I am now hunting with more vigor, and I am after the traffic.

Well, we do not get ranked on the TOP if we are low in PR.

HIGH PR = TOP POSITIONING = TRAFFIC

THEREFORE, Link Popularity is QUITE important now as long as it is a FAIR play..!
