This is an interesting play by Intuit - it's called Zipingo [zipingo.com].

At first glance, it looks to be exactly like Yelp, Judy's Book, and Insider Pages.

More user reviews plus local yellow pages.

Yeah, interesting indeed. I would not expect them to get into the local search play. I am guessing they do have a heap of info for local SMB's however. Think quickbooks registrations.

I am wondering if they are trying to create the property just to have an upsell to their clients..."buy quickbooks pro, get a free listing in our local search engine" type thing.

Object lesson for those who are stuck in their linking strategy. This is uber-linking with a well targeted "affiliate program". A service of some value to the public, from a trusted brand, combined with a service to business and with a chance to either deepen their brand awareness, sell or upsell. I suspect they will give away listings for free just to have a database of small business to which they can do electronic direct marketing: "Your free listing needs to be confirmed/updated. Thank you. Intuit."
