Quietly this Chicago based (Newspaper Funded) Local Search giant is making a claim on the local shopping space.

Having just launched their new local shopping engine, and fueling many leading local search properties, this company is worth a close look: [ShopLocal.com...]

I have watched them since they were Cross Media as we have a Gannett paper here but I have never figured out what their plan was other than marketing the big box stores. I keep thinking that with their connection to the local paper and it's sales staff that I would see more true local businesses becoming involved but doesn't seem to be the case. In my opinion they have an interesting system of breaking apart the ad inserts that the big stores use but I can't see what they have to offer to the smaller stores.I personally think they are missing the boat with their access to the local business community but thats all right as I don't need to worry about competing with them locally.

It looks they had a facelift, rather cool with the way they have categories and such now. It used to be that you could only search by store flyer.

I agree that it is interesting that they are limited to the big chains right now. You can buy advertising there, but there is no mention of getting your site/products listed.

It seems like it would be pretty easy to intigrate a froogle type feed with zip code being one of the limitations, that and verifying that you have a storefront.
