Hi Folks,

I have a friend who works in an office, they are running XP on there office computers.

They want to be able to logon to their office PC from home to work on documents e.t.c

Is there any other way apart from using the likes of Remote Assistant?
As this wouldnt really work becuase you always need someone on the other end to accept the connection.

Or am I wrong in assuming that?

Any help on this matter would be GREATLY appreciated.

To the best of my knowledge Remote Assistant requires people on both ends to work and only works when both machines are running XP (and Messenger).

Microsoft Windows XP will will allow Windows 95, Windows 98 and 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000 to connect to it using a separate software download for Remote Desktop. Remote Desktop is very much like a VNC client. As long as the target machine is online and is set to allow connections you can logon anytime.

Other options include any of the VNC clients out there. These are sometimes easier to setup. There are a number of open source/free softwares out there for you to choose from.

Another option is to use a paid service like GoToMyPC which will provide you an encrypted connection via their service. A lot of people with complicated corporate firewalls use this option.

I would run RDC only inside a Win XP VPN Tunnel, that way you wont have to publish the RDC ports to every hacker out there... & give your VPN client a static IP from within the servers address pool and then enter that number on the server as well in the users profiles.

If you do this you can remote in with a bit more peace of mind :)

If you do have a corporate firewall you anly need to allow VPN pass through / NAT-T etc.
