[OT?] How do I organize the buttons on the taskbar in XP

I wonder if there is a way to reorganize the buttons for the running programs in the taskbar. I like to have them in a particular order so I usually start my progs in the same sequence however, when a prog crashes the order gets messed up. Is there a way to organize these buttons b drag/drop or another way?

There are 2 different types of start bar looks you can opt for. There is the XP standard and the Classic style which is more like the Windows 2000 menu. To access this change simply right-click the Start Menu and choose Properties. You should then see the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" window. In the bottom half of the window, select "Classic Start Menu" and then click OK.

The reason I mention the Classic menu option is that it customizes a bit differently. With either of these menus you can organize them by drag and drop or right clicking on the menu and choosing Sort by Name, which will alphabetize the lists for you. The XP Start menu has 2 different parts. The top left portion is where you can list your application icons the way you want. The lower portion is organized by frequency of access.

To the best of my knowledge, the OS doesn't have that feature. I have often wished it did too just because I'm used to the programs being in a certain place in the taskbar as you described -- creature of habit I guess.

Do a search for windows taskbar organizer and you will find various utilities that allow you to do this.

Earlier I tried searching for taskbar reorganise programs but that did not help me. Thank you, this was just what I was looking for!

I wonder how long before MS will implement this into their desktop OS? It would seem a natural move especially since others have already done so and give it away for free.
